Harnaaz Sandhu didn’t need to dress in fancy gowns in 2022 to get noticed. Just by being herself—a charming, brave young woman of 22—she turned heads.

2021 Miss Universe When she made her final trip to New Orleans on Sunday, India time, to crown the United States’ R’Bonney Gabriel as Miss Universe 2022, Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu wished the universe she governed farewell.

In a glittering black gown with prints of their most memorable moments, Harnaaz, who was overcome with emotion and was wiping tears from her face as she made her way slowly but elegantly across the stage, paid tribute to her Indian predecessors Sushmita Sen and Lara Dutta.

The beauty queen, who has celiac illness (inflammation brought on by gluten), put on weight after winning and was found to have sensitivities she was unaware she had. It was an extremely trying moment, and she said in an interview that she “broke down so many times.”

Her problems were made worse by the way the public treated her. Particularly when she was in India for the FDCI x Lakme Fashion Week last year, she received a lot of criticism online.
